The alpaca walk takes you into the mountain pasture landscape around Hylja at a pace that suits everyone.
We follow gentle trails through old summer-farm meadows and open viewpoints towards the mountains. The route is varied, but not demanding—and there’s always time to pause, take in the view, and breathe.
The alpacas are curious and calm, and walking alongside them quickly becomes a soothing experience. We keep our groups small, with space for questions, quiet conversation, and close moments with the animals.
The walk is suitable for most guests who are comfortable on slightly uneven ground. It’s also a wonderful shared experience for families, where both children and adults can enjoy nature at their own pace.

HIKING & MOUNTAIN FARM LIFE
From the farmyard to mountain views
For those who…
-
want gentle, short walks on soft trails—with plenty of places to sit and pause.
-
want longer day hikes with wide views towards Rondane and Jotunheimen.
-
are travelling as a family: easy terrain, grazing animals, and a firepit as a natural gathering place.
-
need a breather: combine short walks with reading, rest—and perhaps an evening soak in the hot tub.
At Hylja, you don’t need to drive anywhere to get out into nature. Step straight out from the shepherd’s cabin or Seterstuggu and choose from a range of walks—from short strolls to longer day hikes with higher viewpoints.

Short walks from the farmyard
The shortest walks start right outside and follow gentle terrain around meadow edges, streams, and small rises. Perfect for a morning walk with a coffee in your backpack—or a quiet loop before the evening.
Day hikes with views
If you’d like to go further, marked trails lead higher into the landscape. From up here you’ll see Rondane and Jotunheimen as blue silhouettes in the distance—and feel just how open and spacious it is around the mountain farm.
Life at the mountain farm
When the animals are grazing, they become part of the scenery—goat bells and birdsong carried by the wind. During haymaking season, the air is filled with the scent of freshly cut grass, and the firepit often becomes the place for a simple bite and a warm drink as the day winds down.

Experience mountain calm and farm life through the seasons
The same mountain farm can feel entirely different depending on the season. At Hylja, we follow the rhythm of snow, light, and animal life—letting the seasons shape the pace, colours, and sounds around you.

Spring arrives quietly in the high mountains. The snow retreats, and the first green streaks spread across the pasture meadows. Birds return, the light softens, and the landscape fills with the calm that only spring can bring.

Summer at Hylja is bright and full of life. Flowering pasture meadows and colourful wildflowers sway in the breeze, while long days invite you to hike, linger outdoors late into the evening, and enjoy wide views towards Rondane and Jotunheimen.

Autumn dresses the mountains in warm colours—red, orange, and gold. Crisp air makes every walk feel extra atmospheric, and after a day outdoors, little compares to a warm fire and quiet evening hours indoors.

Winter settles a silent white blanket over the mountains. Snow crunches underfoot, the sky glows in soft pastels, and the night stars shine clear and deep—far away from light pollution.
